The surprise discovery of his mother’s 1946 diary leads three time
Melbourne Comedy Festival Best Show nominee Damian Callinan on a cinematic,
romantic romp through post-war Australia. Recreating the 1940’s picture theatre experience, a newsreel is followed by the opening titles of the first feature: a romance based on the 1946 diary of Kathleen Purcell. A camera weaves through the crowd at a town hall dance. However, just as we meet our heroine, the film runs off the spool & Damian sheepishly appears live on stage, explaining that due to a funding shortfall, he will have to live pitch the rest of the story.

Using voice overs from the diary, photos and illustrations, Damian begins to flesh out potential scenes and reveals that there are many suitors vying for his mum’s affections. Keeping secret which of the many potential beaus ultimately win her favour, Damian introduces a split narrative using the source material of his dad's retirement diaries. The narrative then entertainingly bounces between the ex-school principal's hilariously meticulous chronicling of retired life and the charming musings of the 19 year old social butterfly. From town hall dances to Probus Club excursions and victory parades to Better Hearing classes. Eventually back in 1946, a RAAF Fly Boy emerges as the most likely to win Kathleen's hand.

However, the film’s plot takes an unexpected turn when Adrian’s otherwise sweet and amusing diary, reveals the sudden and tragic accident that ultimately ends their loving 61 year relationship. Realising that this is no way to end a romantic blockbuster, the  screenwriter returns to 1946 as the dashing RAAF airman sweeps Kathleen off her feet at a CYMS dance in East Brunswick.

Rated: PG (Grief Themes)
